Starting our 2023 charity drive with £10,000 to The Hamlet Trust

At our end of year party we were pleased to reveal to the team that as our efforts for Break Charity came to a close, our elected charity for 2023 was to be The Hamlet.

The Hamlet provides recreational, educational and social opportunities for children and adults with profound disabilities and complex health needs and currently supports over 500 families in the area.

The Hamlet was established in 1972 and had its roots as a toy library, with the cost of SEN toys being astronomical in comparison to mainstream toys.

I am delighted with the very generous donation made by Candour. As a local charity, it is lovely that our community are so passionate about supporting the work that we do. The money will make a huge difference to us and the children, young people and families that we support. Thank you so much!

Ellie Coulson, CEO, The Hamlet

The toy library brought many families that were previously isolated together and formed the foundation community that grew into what The Hamlet is today.

The Hamlet currently operates two facilities in Norwich:

For children at Johnson place:

  • Multi-sensory studio

  • Soft play room

  • Fully accessible kitchen

  • Art room

  • Wheelchair accessible playground

  • Preschool classroom

For adults on Ella Road:

  • Electrical hoisting equipment

  • Care beds

  • Accessible toilets

  • Quiet rooms and a sensory room

  • Training kitchen with rise & fall units

  • P-pod seating

  • Music studio

The Hamlet is one of the only places for complex needs in the area, providing a break to carers offering a respite service.

With an initial commitment of a £10,000 donation, Candour will work through the year both on other fundraising initiatives and volunteer days to help the Hamlet achieve their goals and continue providing the great care and community service they have for so many decades.
